Written in 1959 by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, it was originally performed by The Clovers, reaching No. 23 on the US and R&B charts that year. The song gained further popularity when The Searchers recorded it in 1964, reaching No. 3 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and No. 2 on the Cash Box chart during the winter of 1965. The song's lyrics describe a man seeking help to find love. He consults a gypsy who, using palmistry, recommends "love potion number nine."
