Retro Retrospect

The first backpacks were created by outdoor gear companies during the 1940s.  The idea of carrying books in backpacks started at the University of Washington.  In 1969 students started buying the meant-for-hiking backpacks and putting their books inside. They did this to keep books dry from the frequent Seattle rains.  By the 1980s, backpacks as bookbags grew from a novelty to a necessity on school campuses.
