From the early 20
th century up into the late 1960s, it was common for the public to enjoy carbonated beverages at local soda fountains and ice cream saloons. Often housed together with apothecaries, commonly called drug stores, these simple soda fountains soon grew and often became the social scene for teenagers and a family gathering place. Many soda fountains also had a grill and businessmen stopped in for lunch as the drug store was usually located in the center of the business district. Teenage boys often treated their favorite gal to a burger and fries on a Saturday night topping off the dinner with a special treat of a banana split.
Soon soda fountains evolved into the local diner and drive-ins. Many retro television shows such as Happy Days, The Andy Griffin Show, and Saved by the Bell were often the place of action in the weekly show
The origin of the banana split is controversial, but most historians believe it was first created in 1904 by David “Doc” Stickler in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. He was inspired by fruit-laden sundaes he saw in Atlantic City. The banana split he created quickly caught on with students of a nearby college. Stickler went on to buy a pharmacy and named it Strickler’s pharmacy. Three years later Ernest “Doc” Hazard of Wilmington, Ohio had a contest to create the banana split. The dessert he came up with is what we usually envision when we think of a banana split and that is the three scoops of ice cream served between two halves of a split banana, topped with chocolate, strawberry, and pineapple sauces, whipped cream, maraschino cherries, and nuts.
He was hoping to attract students from the nearby Wilmington college during the slow season in the winter. Although both Latrobe, PA, and Wilmington, OH claim they are the birthplace of the banana split, the National Ice Cream Retailers Association certified the city of Latrobe, Pennsylvania as the birthplace of the banana split but both towns hold an annual festival in honor of the desert and there are always booths where attendees can build their favorite of a banana split.
Retro would like to honor real and fiction soda fountains plus both creators of the banana split with our delicious Banana Split Slime DIY kit.
