We loved to be scared and the stories of zombies among us has become one of our most popular scenarios. The independent film, “The Night of the Living Dead,” which  was written, directed, photographed, and edited by George A. Romero, and co-written by John Russo was released in 1968 and capitalized on our love of horror movies. The plot revolved around seven people who were trapped in a rural farmhouse in western Pennsylvania, which is under assault by an enlarging group of cannibalistic, undead ghouls. The film attracted widespread controversy and negative reviews upon its initial release for its explicit violence and gore. It has now appeared on lists of “The greatest films ever made” and is identified as the first modern zombie film and a touchstone in the development of the horror genre. In 1999, the film was deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” by the Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry.

Since “Night of the Living Dead,” zombies have become a part of culture from Michael Jackson dancing  with zombies in his “Thriller” video to the popular “Walking Dead” series on television and many popular video games.  It is easy to find a zombie movie or show to scare you right down to your toes, but “Living Dead” won’t send you running scared to hide behind a door from the undead but instead make you embrace the fun of waiting for that special Halloween night when you can go out and safely look for the undead roaming your neighborhood.
