“Slowly now.  Keep your finger in the ring.  Don’t play with it,  lick it or keep it in your hand.”  These were the famous words from the commercial that launched snack packs in 1968.  Hunt-Wesson developed a shelf-stable milk pudding and sold it in metal cans topped with metal lids.   Snack Pack,  the horse, was the product’s mascot and he actually talked to children in commercials warning them to be careful with the lids.  Adults also warned children not to lick the lids that came on pudding cups, but did they listen?

Pudding cup companies developed a child-safe lid by 1970.  Americans can be divided into two age groups, those who cut their tongue licking the metal lids and those who grew up with safe, plastic pudding lids.  We won’t tell your age but what pudding age group are you in?
